Qualitative traits in animal selection

Qualitatively inherited traits are under relatively simple genetic control, and not subject to significant genotype X environment interaction. Selection based on molecular marker is adopted for selection of qualitative traits for which phenotypic assessment was slow or difficult.

a) Hair colour: Hair or coat color in animal are very specific generally they are based on single or few gene effects.

b) Horn size and design: Horned in animal are present or absent because of some individual gene effect.

c) Mutational Disease: Some genetic diseases (sickle cell anemia in human) are best example of mutational disease. Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) in gene help to discover such effect Egg color in chicken: Egg colors in poultry are due to individual gene effect. Yet in some condition, the use of light or disease condition may influence its color.
