Based on host range

i. Monophagous pest: Pests are confined to a single species of plants. E.g. mulberry silkworm, yellow stem borer.

ii. Oligophagous pest: Pest feed the plants, which are botanically related usually same plant families. E.g., Diamond back moth confined to only cruciferous crops.

iii. Polyphagous insect: Those pest feeds on many plants from a diverse range of plant families. In tropical countries, gram pod borer is a serious polyphagous insect.
