Mechanical control

  • This method is applicable for control of insect in kitchen garden.
  • Use of different mechanical device or instrument to collect and destroyed insect is mechanical control.
  • It includes destruction and exclusion for insect pest control.

 

 

a. Destruction

  • Hand picking: hand picking of egg, larva, pupa, and non-flying adults can pick up by hand and kill them.
  • Shaking or beating: E.g. bug
  • Sieving and winnowing: For soil insect

 

b. Exclusion

  • Banding: Banding tree trunk by greasy substances up to 5 cm prevent movement those type of insects which passes its one stage of life cycle in soil. E.g., Mealy bug
  • Trench digging: Digging the trench which have slow movement can easily trap. 30 cm × 6 cm width and depth for management. This method is popular for control army worm. Also useful for Grasshopper and Locust management.
  • Use of water barrier: Creating water barrier in legs of table prevents movement of ant and termites.
  • Trapping: Use of different trap for monitoring and management of insect.
  • Light Trap: For nocturnal insect. 320-400 wavelengths light are more effective. Eg white grub adult,

Yellow sticky trap: For white fly

Blue sticky trap: For thrips monitoring

Yellow pan trap: for aphid monitoring

Delta sticky trap: for aphid monitoring

Pit fall trap: for dwelling insect

  • Wrapping of fruit: Pomegranate is wrapping by muslin cloth to prevent pomegranate butterfly, Banana from Banana scaring beetle.
