- Must thrive in shallow water.
- Must tolerate high water temperature.
- Must tolerate low dissolved oxygen.
- Must withstand fairly high turbidity.
- Have to grow rapidly to marketable size.
- Must not show escaping tendency as shown by wild fishes.
- Eg: Common carp and Nile tilapia.
Suitable varieties of rice for Rice-Fish culture
- Masuli: Late maturity ( 155 days)
- Sabitri : Moderate maturity ( 140 days)
- Radha-4 : Early maturity (125 days)
- Janaki, Himali,Kanchan, Barse-1, Barse-2, etc.
Preparation of rice field and plantation
- Rice seedlings are planted at a distance of 20-25 cm.
- Depth of water should be about 15-25 cm.
- Small fingerlings (<5 g) can be stocked soon after rice is transplanted while larger fingerlings ( >10 g) should not be stocked until rice has turned fully green ( 10-15 DAT).
- About 6000 fingerlings per hectare of common carp or 9000 fingerlings per hectare of Nile tilapia or mixed stockings of common carp and Nile tilapia are recommended.
- Fingerlings are released in trench by proper acclimatization.
- Rice bran and mustard oil cake 1:1 @ 2-4% body weight of fish per day is provided.
Care and management
- Snake control using snake trap.
- Bird control using flash guns, sirens, bamboo rattles and bells.
- Prevent water leakage.
- Don’t use pesticides as far as possible.
Harvesting and Yield
