Introduction
- There is no practical way to generally improve the structure of coarse textured soils.
- Addition of organic matter can be helpful in better aggregation of soils. It will act as a binding for the particles which form the base for aggregation.
- Addition of FYM, compost and green manure are good source of organic matter and ultimately the way to increase aggregation and aggregates stability.
- Soil structural management in fine textured soil is not as simple as that of coarse textured soil. Because of its high plasticity and cohesion, if clay soil is tilled when wet, the aggregates are broken down, the individual particles tend to act independently, soil macro-pores disappeared and the soil is said to be puddled.
- In this condition, it is nearly impervious to air and water. When the soil dries, it usually becomes hard and dense.
- On the other hand, if clay soil is ploughed too dry, large hard clods are formed and become difficult to work into a good seedbed. Obviously, tillage of clay soils must be timed carefully with respect to their moisture content, thus clay soil is also termed as 24-hour soil.
