Introduction

  • Soil classification is systematic categorization of soil on the basis of their common characteristic.
  • Classifying soil is not an easy task as it also possesses number of variables like texture, structure, colour, reaction, organic matter content.

Why classify soil

  • Whenever we call things by group names, or give them labels that inform us of their important properties, we are doing classification.
  • The names or labels could provide information about their appearance, make up, functions or their other known important characteristics.
  • By using a system of classification of soils, we create a universal language of soils that enhances communication among users of soils around the world.
  • It is the grouping of objects (Soil) in some orderly and logical manner into compartments based on differentiating characteristics.
