- The genus Lycopersicon includes 12 species all native to South America
Divided into two sub genera-
a) Eulycopersicon: Characterized by red fruited edible species with caretenoid pigmentation and annual
b) Eriopersicon: Green fruited species with anthocyancin pigmentation
Two types of plant
a) Determinant type- inflorescence occurs more frequently in almost every internode until terminal ones (vegetative bud) are formed and elongation ceases at this point
b) Inderminate type- Inflorescence occurs at every third internode and the main axis continues growing indefinitely Anthesis occurs at morning (around 6.am) and completes within a hour
- Stigma become receptive 16 hrs. before anthesis remain the same for 2-3 DAA
- Appropriate temp. for fruit setting- 21-23°C
