Climate:

  • Turmeric is a tropical crop grown from almost at sea level to 1400 masl.
  • The optimum temperature range is 20 – 30 0C with an annual rainfall of 150 – 250 cm.

 

Soil

  • Turmeric can be grown almost all the soils.
  • However, it thrives best on well drained sandy loam to clay loam soils rich in organic matter.
  • Soil pH = 5.5-6.5

 

Varieties

Local Varieties

  • Spicy type : Larger, softer, more aromatic, light in color : Guntoor and Poona are main cultivar
  • Dyeing type : Hard, bright in color, deep and fast color : Sungava, Suvarna, Sudarsan Surana
