Climate

  • It is cultivated both in tropics and temperate regions.
  • It is a cool season crop, tolerates warm weather.
  • It tolerate frost and freezing weather.
  • It requires low to moderate rainfall.
  • Heavy rains are unsuited.
  • Dry weather is essential during crop maturity and heavy rainfall areas should be avoided.

 

Soil

  • Heavy loam soils with good drainage and adequate organic matter can also be used.
  • Soil pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0 for better growth and development

 

Varieties

a) Pusa Early Bunching: It is a Bushy variety. 115 – 125 days, seeds are bold.

b) Lam selection 1: It is a bushy variety, 70 days duration on Black soils under rainfed condition. It yields about 700 -750 kg per ha.

c) Co 1: It is a selection from TG 2336. It is a dual purpose variety. It is suitable for intercropping. It yields about 650 – 700 kg grain; 4.5 tonnes of green leaves per ha.

d) Rajendra Kranti : It was evolved by mass selection. Developed by RAU, Dholi. It is suitable for both pure and inter crop. It yields about 1200 – 1400 kg in 120 days.

e) Rmt 1 : Evolvedby RAU, Jobner. It is a pure line selection. It is moderately branched. It is tolerant to root rot and powdery mildew. It yields 1500 kg per ha in 140 days.

f) Kasuri, Pusa Early, Methi No.-47, No-14, EC-4911 are the important varieties of methi.

g) Pusa Early bunching is a early cultivator, it is a common methi. It takes about 125 days for its seed maturity.

h) Methi No. 47 and Methi No. 14 are high yielding varieties released by Maharashtra Department of Agriculture.
