Climatic Requirement

  • It can be grown from sea level to 1000 meter elevation in subtropical regions
  • It requires warm temperate or mild climate
  • It can not tolerate frost and hot and humid climate as well
  • It require dry and cool climate
  • Temperature during growth = 15 to 25 o C and during flowering and ripening = 20-30 o C is favorable
  • During harvesting, dry weather is desirable

 

Soil

  • Cumin grows best in deep friable, well drained alluvial or loam soil, rich in organic matter
  • pH ranging between 6 to 7

 

Varieties

a) On the basis of flower color, two types :

  • White flowered
  • Pink flowered

 

b) Indian Varieties :

  • S-1 : Early type , suitable for light soil
  • S 404 : Suitable for heavy soil

 

c) Other Varieties :

  • Gujrat Cumin-1
  • Gujrat Cumin-2
  • Rajasthan Jeera-19
