Disease

a) Yellow vein mosaic virus

  • Leaves show prominently yellowish veins
  • In case of severe infection, leaves, stem and fruits also change to yellowish green and yellow
  • Very common in rainy season
  • Management: Spray Metasstox@0.1% to reduce the population of aphid and Grow resistant varieties

b) Cercospora leaf spot

  • Caused by Cercospora abelmoseki fungus
  • Lower sides of leaves become black and finally drop off
  • Very less flowering and fruiting
  • Management: Crop should be sprayed with Blitox @0.3% at 15 days interval

Insects

a) Red cotton bug (Dyodercus sp)

  • The clusters of nymph and adults suck the sap from mature fruit and damage the seed crop by   reducing the germination

Management:

  • Spray the crop with Sevin @ 0.2%

b) Aphid

  • The clusters of nymph and adults suck the sap

Management:

  • Spray the crop with Sevin @ 0.2% or Endosulfan 35 EC @ 0.2%

c) Fruit borer

  • Main insect causing heavy losses to the fruit
  • Very common in early stage of growth and fruiting
  • Dirty brown spotted caterpillars damage the crop by boring into growing points of the plants and
    later on into the fruits
  • Management: Spray Thiodan 35 EC @ 0.2% at weekly interval
  • Spray the crop with Sevin @ 0.2%

d)Jassids (Empoasea sp.)

  • The adults and nymphs suck the sap of the plant and leaves start curling or become cup shaped

Management:

  • Spray the crop with Sevin @ 0.2% and repeat it 2-3 times but picking of pods should be done before each spray
