Field Preparation and Seed Sowing
- 3-4 ploughing followed by repeated harrowing and leveling is done.
- The basal dose of manure (FYM/Compost) and fertilizer are applied at the time of final land preparation
Method of Sowing
- It is better to soak the seeds in the water for 12 – 24 hours before sowing to hasten germination.
- Several successive sowing at the intervals of 10 – 15 days helps to ensure a continuous harvest of marketable roots. The seeds are sown on ridges or on flat beds.
- Germination is slow (10 – 12 days).
- It is desirable that at the time sowing sufficient moisture should be present in the soil or light irrigation should be given immediately after sowing.
For sowing Carrot on flat beds the field is divided into smaller plots, convenient for irrigation and seed mixed with fine soil or coarse sand is broadcasted and the soil surface is raked to cover the seeds lightly
