Harvesting and Yield

a) Green vegetable onion: Leaves and stem are still tender.

  • Green Onions are ready for harvesting 2 months after transplanting by pulling out by hand when there is a little bulb formation and good, tender vegetative growth.

b) Ripe bulb/Mature bulb: turn yellow, lodge or neck falls when mature bulb.

  • The bulb crop is ready for harvest in 3-5 months after transplanting.
  • Maturity is indicated by the tops falling (neck fall), while the leaves are still green.
  • Harvesting starts when 70% of top falls. Sometime to enhance the maturity of Onion, crushing of top (topping) is done.
  • Leaves removed by cutting upper part at the point of lodging, avoid injury during harvesting.
  • The plants are hand pulled or dug out by khurpi or spade.
  • The tops at the neck and roots at the base are cut off before curing.
