Introduction

  • Scientific name : Coriandrum sativum
  • Nepali Name: dhania
  • English name: coriander
  • Family: Umbelliferae
  • It is said to have originated from Eastern Europe and Asia
  • Coriander is used as common flavoring substance.
  • The stems, leaves and fruits have a pleasant aroma.
  • The whole young plant is used in preparing chutney.

Climatic Requirement

  • Coriander is a tropical crop. It requires frost free climate particularly at the time of flowering and seed formation.
  • For vegetative growth 15 – 25 oC temperature and 20 – 30 oC along with dry weather for seed formation stage is good.
  • It requires frost–free condition particularly at the times of flowering and seed formation.
  • Dry and moderately cool whether during seed formation increases yield as well as quality of the produce.
  • It is mainly cultivated in kitchen garden in winter season for green leaves.
  • So it can be successfully cultivated in plain areas of Nepal.

 

Soil

  • It can thrive on wide range of soil which is rich in organic matter with a pH ranging from 6 – 7.
  • However, deep and fertile loamy soil is best.
  • Alkaline and sandy are not suitable
