  • English Name : Pea
  • Nepali Name : Kerau
  • Botanical Name : Pisum sativum, 2n= 14
  • Place of Origin : Ethiopia
  • Pea is a common nutritious leguminous crop grown in cool season throughout the world.
  • It is very important vegetable in Nepal.
  • It is a highly nutritious vegetable rich in protein, carbohydrate, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin A.
  • There are two types of Peas cultivated in Nepal; the garden Pea ( sativum) for vegetable purpose and the field Pea (P. arvens) for grain.

Uses

  • It is used as a vegetable, pulse and processed (pickle, canning, frozen and dehydrated).
  • Pea straw is a nutritious fodder.

 

Soil

  • It can be grown in particularly all types of soil.
  • However, well drained loam soil is better for its growth and development.
  • Light soil for early crop and heavy soil for high yields are preferred.
  • The optimum pH is 5.5 – 6.5.
