- Pea is a common nutritious leguminous crop grown in cool season throughout the world.
- It is very important vegetable in Nepal.
- It is a highly nutritious vegetable rich in protein, carbohydrate, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin A.
- There are two types of Peas cultivated in Nepal; the garden Pea ( sativum) for vegetable purpose and the field Pea (P. arvens) for grain.
Uses
- It is used as a vegetable, pulse and processed (pickle, canning, frozen and dehydrated).
- Pea straw is a nutritious fodder.
Soil
- It can be grown in particularly all types of soil.
- However, well drained loam soil is better for its growth and development.
- Light soil for early crop and heavy soil for high yields are preferred.
- The optimum pH is 5.5 – 6.5.
