Introduction
- Scientific name=Beta vulgaris var cicla
- Swiss chard is a new crop in Nepal but is becoming popular rapidly during the last decade. It is rich in iron, Calcium, Vit. A, B and protein.
Climate
- It can be grown in Nepal from the terai to the high hill with the adjustment of season.
- In the high hills it is a summer season crop where as in the mid hills to the terai it is a winter season crop.
- In the high hills it can also successfully be grown all the time except the freezing month.
- It can tolerate frost and snow.
- The opt. temperature for its proper growth and development is 15 – 20o
Soil
- It grows well under loam soil with high organic matter content.
- However, it is grown in almost all type of soil
