Irrigation:-
Celery is a moisture loving plant. Hence requires frequent irrigations with a good drainage. Crop should be irrigated at an interval of 7 – 10 days depending upon weather condition. Irrigation management in celery crop is important to minimize the deep percolation of water and nitrate.
Intercultural operations:-
Hoeing and weeding is necessary for clean cultivation as well as proper plant growth. Celery is a long duration crop. So weed control is necessary to get good harvest. As the rootlets are very fine, brittle and split near the soil surface, which are liable to be broken at every operation of soil, shallow cultivation should be practiced. The mulching with Alkathine or hay is useful to check weeds. Pre-planting application of weedicides like Linuran @ 4.8 kg/ha Controls the weeds.
Blanching:-
Proper blanching is usually is done to make the crops crisp, reduce acrid flavor, increase good flavor and tenderness. Blanching is the process of excluding light from leaf stalk which checks the development of chlorophyll. It is done either by wrapping paper around the leaf stalks or by earthing of soil as the plants grow.
Harvesting:-
It can be harvested at different stages of growth. A rapid plant growth generally results into a good harvest. Tender leaves are harvested along with the stalk in May in plains while Nov. and March – April in hills.
Average yield of tender leaves is 330 – 350 qts/ha While seed yield is 300 – 450 kg/ha
