Seed Treatment
- All legume crops can fix atmospheric nitrogen with the help of bacteria in the root.
- When seeds are treated with bacteria culture and sown, the efficiency of nitrogen fixing of crops increases.
- Therefore, the seeds should be treated with Rhizobium culture before sowing.
- The seeds are soaked in water overnight before sowing for better germination.
- Soaking of seeds in GA3 (10 ppm) for 12 hours has given the highest germination.
Irrigation
- Water requirement of Pea is low.
- Generally, first irrigation should be given before sowing,
- Second at flowering and third at pod filling stages.
Interculture
- Tall growing cultivars need support.
- About two weeding may be needed till the plant can cover well.
- A pre-sowing application of three liters per hectare of Basalin controls most of the weeds.
Harvesting
- Tender but well filled pods should be harvested as fresh vegetables.
- During maturity, the sugar content decreases and protein content increases.
- Usually 3 – 4 picking are made at 7 – 10 days interval.
Yield
- Early cultivars:- 2.5 – 4 ton per hectare
- Medium:- 6.5 – 8 ton per hectare
- Late cultivars:- 8.5 – 11.5 ton green pod per hectare
Storage
- Fresh Peas can be kept for two weeks in cold sore at 00C and 80 – 90% R.H
