On the basis of environment control

a. Naturally Ventilated Greenhouse

  • Refers to a greenhouse designed to rely mainly on natural ventilation for temperature and humidity control.
  • It consists of Roof vents, side openings, and louvered windows that facilitate airflow.
  • Frame usually made of steel, aluminum, or bamboo; covering can be polythene or shade net.
  • Example Crops: Leafy vegetables, flowers like chrysanthemum, gerbera, and marigold.
  • The air flow movement created due to density difference of hot and cold air.
  • Air exchange rates are very low and much dependent on the temperature difference between internal and external environment.
  • The open roof has wide anti-rain overlap, protecting crop from inflow of rain.
  • Additional screen of insect netting on ventilation is provided to prevent insect entry.
  • Low cost construction and can be constructed by using locally available bamboo, wood and plastic materials.

Advantages:

  • Moderate cost compared to fully enclosed glasshouses.
  • Suitable for regions with mild climates.
  • Reduced energy requirements.

Limitations:

  • Limited control during extreme weather conditions.
  • May require additional cooling or shading in hot regions.

b. Environmental controlled green house (Artificial ventilated)

  • Here, environment is either fully controlled or partially controlled by using various tools and heating, cooling units.
  • The air flow movement is manually created by using fan and pad system or by any other means.
  • The cost of construction and construction materials is high.
  • One of its types is Fan and Pad system.

Fan and Pad system

  • It is the most common type of greenhouse setup for artificial air movement inside green house.

It features include:

  • Automated fan or manual operated fan cane be used inside these structures.
  • Thermostat, temperature, sensor, auto on and off can be installed.
  • The principle of forced-air ventilation is followed in this system which creates air flow through the greenhouse.
  • Fan either pull fresh air into a greenhouse or exhaust greenhouse air to the outside.
