Sissoo  Dalbergia sissoo

  • It is large deciduous timber species, growing to nearly 30 meters on favorable sites.
  • It can be found up to 1400 meter altitude.
  • Its best growth found on deep bouldery alluvial soil.
  • It produces a strong, elastic timber.
  • The heart wood is very durable, but the sap wood is attacked by borers.
  • It is useful multipurpose species producing fire wood, timber, fodder (medium quality) and leaf litter.
  • It can be propagated by seeds and cutting, but common practice is by seeds.
  • Planting sissoo as root-shoot (stump) cutting is commonest methods.
  • In agroforestry practice, row to row distance is 5 meter and plant to plant distance is 2-3 meters for plantation.
  • Agroforestry plots can be managed by carrying out pruning and thinning operations.
  • Harvesting for timber use can be done after 25 years of plantation establishment.
