Poplar (lahare papal)                        Populus ciliate

                                                            Populus deltoids

  • Two species of populus (Populus ciliate and Populus jacquenmontiana) are native to Nepal.
  • It is deciduous and strongly light demanding species.
  • Found naturally on alluvial soil or near stream
  • Grow well in PH5-7.
  • Some species are very fast growing with dense canopy.
  • It can also be grown up to high mountain ( up to nearly 3000 meters in Bhairab kunda areas of Sindhu Palchok).
  • Seed is very small and light, but it is propagated by cuttings.
  • Cutting should be taken during dormant season, and then produce seedlings or clones.
  • Planting distance is 5 x 5 meters.
  • It is best suited in wheat farm because it leaves fallen down in winter or wheat growing season.
  • It is used for making plywood, boxes and shelving.
  • It can also used as fodder and crude protein contain is about 15% in dry matter.
  • Hybrid popular plantation produced up to 40 m3/ha annually.
