About Lesson
Seed introduction
- A seed is an embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering.
- Seeds can resist extremes temperature and can retain viability under suitable condition
- In normal cases seeds can with stand exposure to temperatures up to 50- 60 °C for some hours
- The viability of the seeds is lost when anabolism is exceeded by catabolism and energy supply system is exhausted with the passage of time
- The survival period of seeds varies with the species and with the storage conditions
- The survival period of most seeds ranges from 5-30 years
- Survival period more than 30 years is very occasional
- Lotus have the evidence of survival of 250 years from the bed of dry lake
