Breeds of pigs

A. Indigenous breeds:

  • 80% of total pig population.
  • Exotic origin represents 19% of total pig population.

 

a) Chwanche (Sus domesticus)

  • Located in low to mid hills and are good scavenger.
  • Black in color and are hardy to local environment.

b) Hurrah (Sus scrofa domesticus)

  • Located in terai region (Tropical and Sub tropical )
  • Rust brown in color.
  • Hardy and suitable for scavenging condition.
  • Needs conservation

c) Bampudke pig (Sus scrofa)

  • Smallest hog breed in the world and are very hardy.
  • Found both in domestic and wild form.
  • Adult body weight is 20 kg.

B. Exotic breeds

a) Land race

  • Originally Danish pig and produce high quality becon in the world.
  • White pig characterized by long deep side, square ham, short legs with heavy lop ears inclined to front above the eyes.
  • Mature bore is 310-400 kg.
  • Sow is 250-330 kg.
  • Widely used in cross-breeding.

b) Duroc

  • American breed
  • Red color with shades varying from golden to cherry red color.
  • Excellent growth rate and feed efficiency.
  • Early maturing and good mother.
  • Mature boar is 400 kg and mature sow is 350 kg.
  • Widely used for cross breeding.

c) Hampshire (Saddle back)

  • Popular for pork production
  • Black pig with white strip around the back so called saddle back.
  • Good mother with 8-10 litters.
  • Mature boar is 400 kg and sow is 350 kg.

d) Tamworth

  • English breed with golden red color with black spots throughout the body.
  • Long legs, long and narrow head with large erect ears.
  • Mature boar is 350 kg and Mature sow is 250-300 kg.

e) Large white Yorkshire

  • English becon breed.
  • Yield more milk.
  • White in color with moderately long head, face slightly dished, broad snout and identical erect ears.
  • Mature boar is 300-450 kg and sow is 250-350 kg.

f) Middle white Yorkshire

  • English breed
  • Slightly smaller and less prolific than the large white.
  • White in color, head moderately short, erect ears and good walker.
  • Mature boar is 270-360 kg and mature sow is 180-270 kg.

g) Black Pakhribas

  • Two types:- one with convex back and another with concave back.
  • Prolific and good mother.
  • Mature boar is 350 kg and mature sow is 250-300 kg.
  • Widely used for cross breeding.
