Classification of chromosome

A. Based on position of centromere:

a) Metacentric: Centromere remains at the center and divides the chromosome into 2 halves.

b) Sub-metacentric: Centromere is near one side and divides chromosome into two unequal halves.

c) Acrocentric: Centromere lies near one end.

d) Telocentric: Centromere is at terminal position.

B. Based on function:

a) Autosomes: Determine various body features.

b) Sex chromosome: Determines sex of an individual.
