Examples of the best combination of trees and crops

Cardamom can be grown successfully under Uttis trees, tea under Sissoo and Siris trees, and Coffee under Ipil-Ipil, and wheat under Populus species (poplar trees shed leaves during wheat growing season in winter).

Shade tolerant spice crops  are Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Chilli (Capsicum annuum), vegetables –Yam (Dioscorea oppositae), Colocassia (Colocasia esculenta), sweet potato and fruits –Pineapple (Ananas sativus), cash crops – Coffee (Coffea Arabica), Cardamom- (Amomum subulatum) and tea, and forage species- Desmodium and forage peanut.
