Participatory Approaches

People’s participation in forestry planning and plan implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of implemented activities is known as participatory approach.

 

Participation of peoples on forest management come through traditional or indigenous efforts, and facilitated efforts.

 

Importance of people’s participation in forest management

  • Greater involvement of peoples in all forms of forestry development and management.
  • Partnership – external inputs has been withdrawn or cost sharing.
  • Human right to be involved in decision making process, where poor, women and disadvantaged members are also involved indecision making process.
  • Recognition of people’s knowledge and experience.
  • Basic foundation of community forest and leasehold forest management.
  • People think this is their own development.
  • Very good relationship between local peoples and DFO field staff.
