Brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens ,Delphacidae,Homoptera )

  • Most distructive pest
  • Excess popn causes hopper burn usually observed in patches of ripening phase of the crops .
  • Its also transmitted grassy stunt virus disease
  • Favorable environment condition is
  • BPH can also transmit Rice Ragged Stunt and Rice Grassy Stunt Neither disease can be cured.

Damaging stage :- adult and nymph

Damaging symptoms:

  • hopper burn or yellowing, browning and drying of plant
  • ovipositional marks exposing the plant to fungal and bacterial infections
  • presence of honeydew and sooty molds in the bases of areas infected
  • plants with ragged stunt or grassy stunt virus.

 

Identification

  • Egg:- female laying egg inside the sheath by lacerating the plant tissue .
  • Nymph:- Brownish black in color having grayish blue eye .
  • Adult :-brown color

 

Life cycle

Egg–5-8 days—–> Nymph –10-15 days–> Adult

 

Management

  • Laval parasitoid like pseudognatopus
  • Predator : green mired bug, carabid beetle , lady beetle
  • Light trap, rice+soybean(intercrop),transplanting older seed .
  • Chloropyrifus 20% Ec @2ml/l
  • Buprofenin 25%Ec @ 1g/l, it’s contact inhibitor
