Jute hairy caterpillar (Splilarctia oblique, Arctiidae, Lepidioptera)

Damaging stage: larva

Bionomics of the jute hairy caterpillar, Spilarctia oblique (order:  Lepidoptera, family: Arctiidae; walker) of Corchorus olitorius jute

Damaging symptoms: scrap the green parts of leaves, in severe condition only leaves midribs and cross vein and completely skeletonized the jute plants.

Identification

  • Egg: underside of leaves
  • Larva: yellow hairy and brownish red.
  • Pupa: soil, leaves.
  • Adult: brown color, black spot on wings.

Life cycle:

Egg -1 weeks–> larva –2-3 weeks—> Pupa –6-7 days–> Adult

 

Management

  • Make trench and irrigate.
  • Egg parasitoid:trichogramma chionis @50000-1000000
  • Larval parasitoids: Meteorus spilosomae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Protapantales obliquae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).
  • Bacillus thuringenesis.
