Red ant ( Doryllus orentalis, Dorylidae, Hymenoptera)

  • Social insect ( female,male, worker)
  • Polyphagus pest. Damaging stage : worker Damaging symptoms :
  • feed underground parts of plant like root, tuber, and underground
  • Wilt and turn yellow and dies.

Identification

  • Male : dark brown in color, two pair of membranous
  • Worker : mainly damaged to host plant, eye absent, sterial female .

Female : larger body, eyeess, 2 pair of wings . Layiong egg in soil below 3-5 cm in ground level. Hatch in 1wks and 2 wks in pupa

 

Management

  • Solution of azadiractin @100ml/l in soil near the plant stem.
  • Drench water diluted cow urine (1:5 urine:water)+ tobacco dust (5g in every 1 l iter of diluted cow urine)in the soil @100ml/plant at tuber initiation.
  • Application of chloropyrifos in soil, dursban10%G @ 1kg/ropani before planting.
