Sugarcane early shoot borer (Chilo infuscatellus, pyralidae, Lepidioptera)

Damaging stage:larva

Damaging symptoms:

  • Dead heart
  • Easily pulled
  • Pin hole near
  • Damage early stage of sugarcane.

 

Identification

  • Egg: White, ventral surface of leaves.
  • Larva: dirty white, 5 longitudinal stripes
  • Pupa: inside the stalk.
  • Adult : straw color, balck or brown patches distribute forewings, concentrated of spot is higher in forewings with pointed head. Hindwings are white and lighter.

 

Life cycle:

Egg –7 days–> Larva –21 days–> Pupa –7-9 days–> Adult

 

Management

  • Ratooning practice should be discouraged.
  • Uprooting, field sanitation, crop
  • Light trap.
  • Trichogramma chilonis @50000/ha
  • Release tachinid parasitoid: Sturmiopsis inferens @ 125 gravid
  • Granulosis virus @500lit/ha
  • Intercropped with dhaicha, green gram, black gram.
  • Chloropyrifos 1kg/ha.
