Sugarcane leaf hopper( Pyrilla perpusilla, Lophopidae , Hemiptera)

Damaging stage: Nymph and Adult

Damaging symptoms:

  • suck sugary substance from sugarcane and excrete the honey dew
  • Developed sooty mold that reduced symptoms low sugar level in plants.

Identification

  • Egg::cluster on the ventral surface of leaf and covered with whitish fluffy
  • Nymph: pale yellow color, two white prominent feather like filament at tail.
  • Adult: straw color, prominent red eye with pointed head, wedge shape

 

Life cycle:

Egg—-7-12 days—> Nymph –24-65 days–> Adult

 

Management

  • Dusting with the nicotine dust
  • Reduced N2
  • Predator: rove beetle on egg of leaf
  • parasitoid: Epiricrania melanoleuca @8000 -10,000 cocoon /ha.
