Sugarcane top borer (Scirpophaga nivella, Pyrallidae, lepidioptera)

Damaging stage: larva

Damaging symptoms:

  • Bunchy top of sugarcane
  • Top portion of sugarcane dries

 

Identification

  • Egg: white, cluster
  • Larva: creamy white or yellow head, devoid of stripes with atrophied
  • Pupa: pupation on cane, pale yellow color
  • Adult: white color and black spot on each forewings. Female have tuft of crimson red/orange or buff color anal hair.

 

Management

  • Trichogramma japonicum @50000/ha
  • Light trap.
  • Intercropped with dhaicha
  • Resistant varieties
  • Fipronil 1kg/ha
  • Thiodiocarb 2gm/l
  • Soil application: carbofuran 3G @30kg/ha, chloropyrifos @12.5 kg/ha.
