Yellow rice stem borer (Scirpophaga incertula ,pyralidae,lepidioptera)
Damaging stage :- caterpillar
Damaging symptoms :-
- dead heart(death of terminal shoot of vegetative stage )
- white head(reproductive stage of rice)
- tiny hole on stem and tiller of rice.
Identification
- Egg :- tip margin of leaf parts in dorsal parts
- Larvae :-yellowish white with brown head where as strip on the body and dark head in striped borer(chilo partelus ) while in pink head in pink borer( sesamia infrens).
- Pupa :- found inside the steam
- Adult :- female :forewings are yellow with two dark spot , male :forewings are brown color with dark spot .
Life cycle ;-
Egg –1 week–> larvae–3-6 weeks –> Pupa –1-2 week —> Adult
Management :
- Trichogramma chilonsis (egg parasitoid)
- Bacillus thuringenesis (dipel, biolep)@3g/l at evening hr .
- Napier grass/elephant grass as a catch crop
- Sudan grass –trap crop
- Sliver lea (desmodium uncinatum)-commercial legumes when intercropped with maize ,repel ovipositing stem borer.
