Government policy on fruit development

a) First Five-Year Plan (1956-1961 A.D.)

  • Nepal launched its first developmental plan as First Five Year Plan from 1956 A.D.
  • Top priority was given to transportation and communication with 36% share.
  • Second priority was given to Agriculture including village development and irrigation with 20% share.

 

 

b) Second Five Year Plan (1962- 1965 A.D.)

  • Priority to horticulture was given.
  • During the Second Plan 40 thousand improved fruits saplings, 60 thousand banana, pineapple, other fruit seeds and 7 thousand kilograms of improved vegetable seeds were sold to farmers.

 

c) Third Five Year Plan (1965-1970 A.D.)

  • Agricultural development was accorded topmost priority in the Third Plan
  • Target: Increase production of food grains by 15 per cent and production of cash crops by 73 per cent. Fruits and vegetables coverage should be about 5000 hectares by the end of third year plan
  • Horticulture centers will be established in different in different agro ecological domain
  • Seven new centers will be established during this Plan period (will increase to 23).
  • These centers produce some 760,000 fruit grafts during the plan period. By 1969-70, they will be producing 230,000 fruit grafts annually.

 

d) Fourth Five Year Plan (1970-1975 A.D.)

e) 5th Five Year Plan (1975-1980 A.D.)

  • Top priority to agriculture development
  • Fifth Plan aimed at increasing the agriculture output by 19.2 percent
  • The area of fruit crop increased to 42 thousand hectares with production to 274 thousand tons (Shrestha, 1998) in this plan

 

 

f) 6th Five Year Plan (1980-1985 A.D.)

  • During the Sixth Plan period 25 farms in the public sector and 22 in private sector provide fruit saplings to the tune of 21,327,000 will be distributed to bring the fruit cultivation area to 42,000 hectares in the Sixth Plan period
  • Citrus cultivation will gain 30%
  • Priority given to citrus and other major fruits

 

g) 7th Five Year Plan (1985-1990 A.D.)

  • It identified several major fruit crops (citrus, apple, banana, pineapple, mango, walnut, pear and grapes) important for commerce
  • Base year 1984/85 per capita consumption of fruits of 20.56 kg will be increased by 18.04% to 24.27 kg during the Seventh Plan.

 

h) 8th Five-year Plan (1992-1997 A.D.)

  • to increase and stabilize incomes of farmers
  • meet increasing demands for horticultural products,
  • transform food production-oriented agriculture to high income generating farm business.
  • Two Programs (GENERAL and SPECIAL)

 

i) 9th Five Year Plan (1997-2002 A.D.)

  • Priority = Apple and Citrus
  • Focus on development of fruit orchards at highway corridors (Mango, Litchi, Banana, Pineapple, Apple, Citrus, and Pear etc.)
