Introduction
- Familiy: Moraceae ( Tetraploid species with 2n=56 )
- Immature green fruits are widely harvested for use as a vegetable and are cooked and used like potato.
- The fruit pulp is sweet and tasty and used as dessert or preserved in syrup
- The seeds contained in the ripe fruits are also cooked.
- The fruits and seeds are also processed in a variety of ways for food and other products. The pulp can also be made into concentrate or powder to be used to prepare drinks
- Ripe pulp is used to flavor products such as ice cream and beverages.
- The seeds are eaten after boiling or roasting, or dried and salted as table nuts, or ground to make flour which is blended with wheat flour for baking
- Jackfruit seeds are nutritious, rich in potassium, fat, carbohydrates and minerals.
- The latex contains 71.8% resins consisting of 63.3% yellow fluavilles and 8.5% white albanes) which are valuable in varnishes.
- The major growing districts are Chitwan, Nawalparasi, Palpa, Tanahu, Dhading, Sindhuli.
- The major potential districts are Bara, Parsa, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Dhanusha , Saptari and Sunsari ( Pakurel and Dhakal 1993 )
