  1. European Pear(Pyrus communis):
  • Pear flavored, very soft and melting texture with persistent calyx.
  • Susceptible to fire blight disease.
  • Requires > 1000 hrs of chilling period.
  • Varieties include Bartlett, Williams, B uerre, Hardy, Anjou, Comice, Conference.

 

  1. Oriental/Asiantic or Japanese Pear (Pyrus pyrifolia)
  • Apple like flavored, crispy and juicy with deciduous calyx.
  • Needs <1000 hrs of chilling period.
  • Varieties include Pharping local, Hosui, Kosui, Chojure, Havana, etc.
