Classification

  1. Macrospermae (Thulo masuro)
  • Large seeded type (6-9 mm diameter) (1000- seed wt: 55-65 g)
  • Large flat pods
  • Longer crop duration (80-120 days)
  • Distributed to Mediterranean, Africa and Turkey
  • Originated from microspermae by selection.

 

  1. Microspermae (Sano Masuro)
  • Small seeded type (3-6 mm diameter) (1000- seed weight: 25-30 g)
  • Small convex pods.
  • Shorter crop duration (65-70 days).
  • Shorter plant height (35-50 cm)
  • Resistant to drought

 

 

Origin:

  • India and Central Asia.

 

Climate and soil

  • Cold season crop and can be grown at an altitude of 3800 masl.
  • Grown as rabi crop from Oct.- April.
  • Optimum temperature 10-15 0C for growth.
  • For vegetative growth: 10-190
  • Maximum production at 19-200
  • Well drained, clay loam, sandy loam or silty loam soil is suitable.
