A) Based on maturity period
a. Early:
- less extensive and shallow roots,
- less number of flowers and branches.
b. Late:
- extensive deep penetrating roots
- more number of flowers and branches.
B) Based on seed color
a. White seeded:
- light colored having a smaller number of flower and branches.
b. Black seeded:
- dark colored having a greater number of flowers and branches.
C) Based on number of carpels in the capsule
a. Bicarpellatum:
- having two carpels in the capsule
b. Quadricarpellatum:
- having 4 carpels in the capsule
D) Based on chromosome number
a. Group I (2n=26):
- Sesamum indicum and Sesamum alatum
b. Group II (2n=32):
- prostratum and S. lacimatum
c. Group III (2n=64):
- radiatum and S. accidentale
