Classification

A) Based on maturity period

a. Early:

  • less extensive and shallow roots,
  • less number of flowers and branches.

 

b. Late:

  • extensive deep penetrating roots
  • more number of flowers and branches.

 

B) Based on seed color

a. White seeded:

  • light colored having a smaller number of flower and branches.

 

b. Black seeded:

  • dark colored having a greater number of flowers and branches.

 

 

C) Based on number of carpels in the capsule

a. Bicarpellatum:

  • having two carpels in the capsule

 

b. Quadricarpellatum:

  • having 4 carpels in the capsule

 

D) Based on chromosome number

a. Group I (2n=26):

  • Sesamum indicum and Sesamum alatum

 

b. Group II (2n=32):

  • prostratum and S. lacimatum

 

c. Group III (2n=64):

  • radiatum and S. accidentale
