Factors responsible for inoculation

A) Inoculation is required when;

  • Native desert or range land (no cultivation before)
  • Virgin land (no legume cultivated)
  • If legume is cultivated after >3 years
  • If legume is cultivated but with poor nodulation and N fixation (poor soils)

B) No inoculation required if;

  • Legume grown with adequate nodulation and N fixation
  • If surrounding fields are grown with legume with adequate nodulation and N fixation.

Methods of seed inoculation

  1. Heat (for 15 min) jaggery in water @ 50 g/ 1 l of water and cool.
  2. Mix each 200 g packet of inoculums to 200 ml of jaggery solution.
  3. Sprinkle the solution over the seed and mix seeds to slurry.
  4. Shade drying for 30 min.
  5. Use within 24 hours.
