Sowing Methods

a. Broadcasting:

  • Non-uniform depth of sowing, irregular distribution thus reduce yield.

b. Line sowing:

  • RR- 20-30 cm, PP- continuous.
  • Normal sowing at wider spacing (RR 30cm)
  • Late sowing at narrower spacing (RR 20cm)

Sowing depth:

  • 8 to 7.6 cm (Optimum: 4-5 cm).

Seed rate

  • 20-80 kg/ha for normal cropping.
  • 20-40 kg/ha for mix cropping.
  • 70-80 kg/ha for sole cropping.
  • Optimum plant density: 90-120 plants/m2.
  • Gypsum or slaked lime improve the establishment and early root development of legume crop in puddled soils.

Plant Nutrient Management

  • a starter dose of 10 to 15 kg N per ha is often recommended.
  • Application of 5 ton FYM and 20:40:0 kg NPK/ha, 20 days before sowing is recommended.
  • 2 t/ha of lentil removes 100 kg N, 28 kg P2O5, 78 kg K2O and 4.8 kg S from the soil.
  • General blanket recommendation of Nepal is; 4-6 t/ha FYM and 20:20:20 kg NPK/ha.
