Absicissic Acid (ABA)

  • Abscisic acid, is involved in many developmental plant processes, including leaf abscission, responding to environmental stress
  • Abscisic acid is produced in the roots of the plant as well as the terminal buds at the top of the plant
  • Carns and Addicott extracted two substances Abscisin I from old cotton balls and Abscisin II from young cotton ball, which accelerates abscission of leaves
  • These substances were known to be as Abscissic acid

 

Role of ABA

  • Induces bud dormancy
  • Promotes senescence
  • Accelerates leaf abscission in cotton plant
  • Induces flowering during long days in certain short day plants – ineffective in short day plants
  • Counteracts GA
