Basic principles

  • Off-season cultivation of vegetable refers to the production of the vegetable before or after their normal cultivation seasons of production.
  • This can be accomplished by using the different agro-climatic conditions, adjusting the planting time, selecting and improving the varieties or by creating the controlled environment by making the plastic tunnels, polythene houses, permanent glass houses etc.

 

Advantages of the off-seasons vegetable cultivation

  • Off-seasons vegetable offers the higher prices to the farmers.
  • Consumers may have the fresh vegetable even in the off-seasons.
  • Farmers can get the employment round the year.
  • Farmers can increase their knowledge so that they can adopt the vegetable cultivation in the commercial scale.
  • Off-seasons vegetable production has a lot of prospects for the exports in the foreign country so that there is ample scope of hard-earned foreign currencies.

 

Disadvantages of off-seasons vegetables

  • It needs skilled knowledge than the normal seasons production
  • Production cost of vegetable is higher.
  • It is riskier business as there is always threat of insects , pests and diseases .
  • Off-seasons production can be adopted in commercial if is near by the market.
