Botanical Classification of Horticulture Crops

  • This is the scientific system of classification of horticultural crops
  • Every species of horticulture are classified in order by this system, given as below:

 

Kingdom

Division

Order

Family

Genus

Species (sp/spp)

Variety (var.)

 

The plant kingdom is divided into four divisions

a) Thallophyta

b) Bryophyta

c) Pteridophyta

d) Spermatophyta

  • Most of the horticultural plants are spermatophytes
  • Spermatophyta includes

i) Gymnosperm (naked ovules)

ii) Angiosperm (ovules enclosed in a carpel or ovary)

 

Most of vegetables, fruits and ornamentals plants belongs to class angiospermae • The class angiospermae is further divided into two orders

a) Monocotyledonae

b) Dicotyledonae

  • These two orders are again divided into many groups called family
  • Horticultural crops (fruits, vegetables and ornamentals plants) possess many families
