About Lesson
Flower initiation and development
- Flowers are initiated from vegetative meristems that change into flowering meristems
- This change is an irreversible process
- The meristems differentiate into flower parts
- Proper temperature conditions are required for success but also high temperature can cause abortion
- Flowers can chemically induce externally applying certain growth regulators such as auxins
- Commercial production of certain crops such as pineapple is aided by artificial flower induction
- Other growth regulators are also used to control the number of flowers set on a plant
