Grafting
- Grafting and budding is a art joining two different plant parts together, in such a manner that they unites and continues their growth as simple plant
- In case of budding single bud is inserted in to the stock, where as in grafting a bud stick consisting two or more buds is inserted in to the stock
- Stock is a lower portion of the graft union, whereas, scion is the upper portion a place at which both unites is termed as scion or graft union
- The root stock of 1-2 years age having pencil thickness and desired attributes is selected for grafting
- Generally, the scion shoot of matching thickness as of rootstock is selected
- To get success in union of grafting, the cambium of both the rootstock and scion should unite properly
- In temperate fruits better success is achieved by grafting just before the end of dormant season However, June-July grafting gives better result in tropical and subtropical fruits
- After performing the grafting process, the union portion of rootstock and scion should be sealed immediately using polythene tape or wax
- All the shoots emerged from root stock from lower portion of graft union should also be removed time to time
