Saturated Water Flow in Vertical Column of Soil

A uniform, saturated vertical column of soil of which upper surface is ponded with constant head of water H1, and the lower surface of which is set in a lower constant level reservoir as shown in figure 7.5. Flow is, thus, occurs from the higher to the lower reservoir through a column of length L.

 

When flow is vertical both the pressure and gravitational head may vary and therefore, flow or gradient of flow may change.
