Structure of Water

  • Ability of water to influence dozens to soil and plant reactions is determined by its structure. Water is simple compound containing one oxygen atom and two much smaller hydrogen atoms bonded covalently.
  • The arrangement of hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water molecules is not linear, rather forms V-shaped arrangement at an angle of 1050. This results in the asymmetrical molecule with shared electron closer to oxygen than hydrogen. This arrangement possesses unique properties of soil water and influences number of reactions important in soil and plant science.
