Care and  management of Pre-ruminant calves

  • Birth to 5 days vital for their later growth and development of the body organs.
  • Maintain Sanitation and disinfection
  • Resistance to diseases is one of the pre-requisites for best performance.
  • Immunoglobulin antibodies acts against antigens
  • Colostral gamma globulins are absorbed through epithelial tissues of abomasum and gut upto 24 hours after birth.

 

Colostrum feeding

  • Colostrums contains higher level of TS, ash, cl, casein, albumin, globulins, NPN constituents.
  • Colostrums is also rich in Ca, Mg, Fe, P, Vit. A, D, and E.
  • The calves immediately after birth should be fed half liter colostrum within 2 hours.
  • Feeding 1/10th of its body weight be continued upto 5 days.
  • If no. Castor oil along with ½ lit. of whole milk should be given thrice a day for first 3-5 days.

 

Milk Feeding

  • One 10th of body weight
  • Optimum gain per day 500gm per day.
  • Minimum period of whole ,ilk feeding 2 weeks
  • Care in feeding milk

–body temperature 390c

–Utensils clean and sterilized

–Frequency of feeding twice daily

 

Feeding calf starter

  • Due to insufficiency of milk.
  • Ideal starter should be 20% DCP and 70% TDN.
  • It is mixture of grains, legumes, minerals, vitamins and antibiotics
