Grading of wool :

a) Based on blood system :

  • It depends upon genetic purity of sheep. Pure merino or rambouillets was considered as fine blood.
  • The cross between fine wool breed and other breed is called as one -half blood.
  • As the proportion of fine breeding represented in fleece become smaller ; it will be considered as three-eighth , one-fourth or low one fourth blood.

b) Spinning count system :

  • Spinning count system is similar to American blood grade system in the sense that the different grade are normally determined visually.
  • It is more scientific and specific because it provides 16 categories for describing wool.

c) Micron system :

  • This system measure diameter of wool.
  • It is best method.
  • Examples : Fine (17-20.64 micron), Medium (22.54-30.38 micron) and Coarse  ( 31.99-36.09 micron)

d) Based on crimp /crimpness :

  • Crimp is the wavy appearance of raw wool.
  • Number of crimps per unit length is known as crimp frequency.
  • Crimp frequency is used as indicator of quality.
  • Fine wool has more crimp frequency and coarse wool have less crimp frequency.

e) Color :

  • A creamy bright white color in raw wool is considered as superior quality than other light color.

f) Elasticity :

  • Fine wool is elastic to some extent while coarse wool is non-elastic and brittle.
