Importance of CEC in Soil Fertility & Agriculture

1️. Plant Nutrient Supply

  • Exchangeable K⁺ and Mg²⁺ are major sources for plants.
  • CEC helps retain essential nutrients and prevents leaching.

2️.  Soil pH Regulation

  • Higher CEC soils require more lime to raise pH.
  • Low CEC soils acidify faster.

3️.  Fertilizer Efficiency

  • CEC reduces the mobility of K⁺ and NH₄⁺, preventing nutrient loss.

4️. Environmental Protection

  • CEC adsorbs toxic metals (Cd, Zn, Ni, Pb), preventing groundwater contamination.

5️. Soil Structure & Stability

  • Exchangeable Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ help form stable soil aggregates.

6️. Soil Formation & Weathering

  • CEC plays a role in soil development and the formation of different soil types.

7️. Soil Amendments (Lime & Gypsum)

  • Liming increases base saturation, improving soil fertility.
  • Gypsum improves soil structure and reduces sodium accumulation.
